Outdoors

Living in Vermont has influenced my hobbies in a pretty profound way. I’ve been snowboarding since I was a kid, and have been pretty proficient since then, but I wouldn’t have said I was genuinely really good at it until a few years ago. And I don’t mean I’m rocking 540s or sending big rails – I can just competently ride damn near any terrain. Goofy, switch, catch a little air, jump a water bar, penguin walk some flats, you know the drill. So, in the winters I’ve taken to splitboarding, often in the maintained backcountry at Bolton Valley, but more and more learning the local spots from friends and coworkers.

In alpine touring there are two kinds of people; those in it for the challenge of the uphill, and those in it for the downhill through untouched snow. Generally I’m more of an uphiller, but damn, some of the downhills make me understand why people do drugs. Also, snowy alpine landscapes are among my favorites.

They say that as you hit your thirties, you either get married or get into endurance sports. I fall in to the latter category and started training for a marathon after a breakup in November 2025. The breakup was more fuel to the fire rather than the trigger… That said, I’ve been running for years, but never wanted to call myself a runner. I was part of a relay team for the Vermont City Marathon in 2023 and did just under a 2 hour half marathon on the same course in 2024 so we’ll see how this goes.

Running isn’t my only warm weather outlet – I got into cycling (specifically gravel biking, because Vermont) in 2025 and did a long ride from Montreal, Quebec to Burlington, VT over two days, roughly 70-mile and 40-mile legs. I hope to do the full 120 mile stretch in one shot in 2026 on the new whip – a Norco Search A GRX.
